The 50th meeting of the Sports Council on 14 October 1985, approved a regulation on the election of the Kópavogur sportsperson of the year. The first election in keeping with the regulation took place in December 1985.
Prior to this, i.e. from 1974, the Kópavogur Rotary Club had presented the ‘Kópavogur Sportsman of the Year’ award. The club presented the award on fifteen occasions, to seven men and eight women.
In 1985-87, top athletes in Kópavogur were honoured by both Kópavogur local authorities and the Kópavogur Rotary Club.
In 1988, the awards were merged into one title and the Kópavogur Sports Council became responsible for the appointment from 1988 – 1997.
The Sports and Youth Council of Kópavogur (Íþrótta- og tómstundaráð Kópavogs, ÍTK) decided, in 1998, to establish the titles Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year. As of 2010, the Kópavogur Sports Council has been responsible for giving out the awards.
Since the Rotary Club began honouring athletes in Kópavogur, fifteen individuals have borne the title ‘Sportsman of the Year in Kópavogur’ and thirteen have borne the title ‘Kópavogur Sportsman’. Since 1998, seventeen women have borne the title ‘Kópavogur Sportswoman’ and seventeen men, the title ‘Kópavogur Sportsman’. In total, 62 awards have been awarded to 32 women and thirty men.
